On April 8, the Rio City Council approved the creation of a municipal holiday on July 7 due to the BRICS summit, which will take place on July 6 and 7. The decision aims to ease the city’s logistics and movement of international delegations. The bill has passed in two sessions and now only awaits final approval from Mayor Eduardo Paes.
However, the holiday will not apply to all professional sectors and activities. Excluded from the holiday include: bars and restaurants; hotels; shopping centers and malls; theaters, cinemas, libraries; tourist attractions; journalistic and radio broadcasting companies and sound and image broadcasting companies, as well as pay-TV programming and production companies; industries located in the North and West areas of the city; bakeries; establishments that develop remote work and essential services and activities.
This year’s summit will host leaders from Brazil, Russia, China, India, South Africa (founding BRICS members) along with new participants: Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia, and Iran. Brazil has assumed the presidency of BRICS in January and will lead the summit until the end of 2025.
